CSE 191: Women in Computing

**Grace Hopper Art by: David Moore	This course is an exploration of the world of women in computing, examining their accomplishments, their current status, and gender issues in computing. Volunteering at or otherwise attending the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing *, to be held in San Diego October 4-7, 2006, is expected as part of the course. The conference creates a supportive community of almost a thousand (primarily) women in computing, combining talks on leading research with special sessions on the role of women in computing. Many attendees find it memorable and invigorating to take part in such a group. Students will further explore the topic through selected readings, group discussions, written reflections, outside speakers, and presentations, culminating in a class wiki on Women in Computing, with collages, student articles, and photographs. The wiki aims to help others better understand the impact of the conference and the influence and involvement of women in computing. This course is open to all interested undergraduate and graduate students, but is limited to 25.
